Cullen Film Review: X-Men 3

Wow.

How do you keep the Xmen franchise rolling? According to new director Brett Ratner: Raise the stakes. MINOR SPOILER ALERT: Holy crap! I couldn't believe that ______ _______ would kill ________ _ and _______, but I salute Ratner for being daring. Colossus, Angel, and Shadowcat are introduced (or given larger roles) in this one, but they are still afterthoughts. Vinnie Jones is adequate as Juggernaut, but doesn't get to do as much as he could. Kelsey Grammar is perfect as the furry blue Beast, and the Pyro-Iceman showdown is pretty staisfying. Overall a great third installment that hopefully won't be the last with so many great villains (Apocalypse) and Xmen (Gambit) yet to be brought to the screen.

Haven't seen X-Men 3, will go this weekend after sitting for the CFA exam.

I did see MI:3 - overrated. The first is still the best, and how many times are they going to play off on the IMF agent gone bad script?! Not enough screen time for Felicity.

Da Vinci Code - good but not great like the book. They had to take some things out to cut the time down, and unfortunately, this type of story is best suited on paper not film. The acting was good though. Paul Bettany (Silas) is one scary lookin' dude.

Trailer for Superman - how horrendous was the casting of Lois Lane? Kate Bosworth doesn't look like she'll do well in this movie at all. Should have gone with my personal favorite, Eliza Dushku, on this one. The movie still looks good albeit a little cheesy.

Saw X-Men 3...I thought it was good...not as good as 2 though. I went in with a lot of knowledge about the characters, but I think that people who never read comics will find this movie really dense. Plus the explanation of Dark Phoenix in order to get around the obvious difficulties of doing it like the comic book made me giggle a little. "Two personalities...Jean and one that came to call itself...PHOENIX!" heh.

I am boycotting the Da Vinci Code. I thought the book was terrible...it was very poorly written. Dan Brown took what could have been a cool idea and turned into a bad book. Basically its a running exposition...there had to be better ways of moving the story along then having his protagonists hide in closets, etc. and talk to one another before the bad guys find them again.

I am also boycotting MI:3...I personally believe that Tom Cruise died sometime arouncd 1996 (after the first MI) and the scientologists have replaced him with an alien clone lovebaby or something. Outside of the first oh 30 minutes of War of the Worlds (disintegration rays are cool...), what was the last Cruise movie you liked at all?

You are crazy if you aren't excited about Superman! Its a pseudo sequel to the greatest comic book movie ever, Superman II ("KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!!!; Take us to this Planet Hooston!). Like it matters who plays Lois Lane. All she is is the hostage anyway. They could have at least cast someone with dark hair. Eliza Dushku would have been a push honestly...its not like she is a good actress either. I think Kate Beckensale would have been great. And even better if they get her all nekkid. Or hell go with an unknown. Did Margot Kidder ever do anything else? Besides turn into a crack whore?

Beckinsale would have been good too. I agree about the Da Vinci idea. Michael Baigent's books are more entertaining. So are Clive Prince's and Lynn Picknett's books; all are about the same or similar topic but are "non-fiction."

I don't think I'll see this movie until it's on DVD. As a mainly DC kid growing with the exception of Spiderman, I think a lot of this movie will go over my head. Most of the new characters I've never heard of. I almost get the feeling that this sequel is mainly for the X-Men comic fans. They just piled as many new faces in there, without actually developing any of them. But then again, I haven't seen it yet. Something tells me that this isn't the final installment either (especially after the weekend opening).
